Well, with the holidays well over and things starting to get back into a routine, both Dana and I have been feeling pretty crappy as of late.  Partially attributed to the bevy of disease’s Deuce brings home on a weekly basis, we have yet to go a week with the entire household healthy.  I am currently nursing a cold.

We have come to the conclusion, however, that our eating habits need to change.  Not a short term “diet,” mind you, but more of a long term plan on eating healthy and exercising (neither of which we do much of at the moment).  Dana and I have tried to say “let’s eat healthy,” desperately trying to avoid the term “diet.”  However, we don’t do well with that kind of thing, as neither of us do well without some guidelines.

So we’ve decided to try the “South Beach Diet.”  Yes, I know, it’s a “fad” diet, but in reading the literature, the philosophy is one that is a bit easier to swallow than “Eat four pounds of bacon, but if you have a slice of toast you’re done.”  It basically emphasises lean meats, lots of veggies, some fruits, and some grains, all of the whole-grain persuation.  To me it seems doable, simply because the monotony of the all-meat Atkins diet is replaced with a little less fat but significantly more variety.  And the maintenance phase of the diet isn’t all that far off of our normal eating (although the fast food and potatoes have to stop, but that’s not a bad thing).

Se we’ll see how far we get.
