Up and running again

Published 5.16.2005 by ~mattg

After some downtime last week, I’m running at about 90% capacity. The only thing that is holding me back is needing to get some of the code off of the old hard drive. Luckily, the data recovery service we sent the drive to was able to get all the info off the drive. They should be able to ship the thing today or tomorrow, meaning I’ll have all my data back by Wednesday.

In the meantime, i’ve taken some precautionary measures to ensure this doesn’t happen again. First, after installing everything for development (and not personalizing anything), I created an image of the drive. That way, if it dies again, I just reload the image and keep on trucking. I’ve also partioned the drive on this machine so that I have one disk for installed application and one disk for data. I have always had luck with this in the past and will continue to do this until it kills me. Finally, I started an NT backup job that runs M-F and backs up my important data files (especially source code, database structures, etc) to a server on our network.

I’m also going to do some cleanup on the Visual SourceSafe server we have running and start checking everything into there as well. After all, that’s what it’s there for, isn’t it?
