Everything old is new again

Such a cliche, although I don’t think we can blame Hollywood for being cliche, after all, I think they may have created the popular notion of the word.

In browsing the Internet Movie Database, I decided it would be fun to search for some films that are currently in some production or pre-production stage. I searched for films with release dates in 2006 and 2007, and I must say, I was more than a little shocked at some of the titles I found. Most didn’t have very good (if any) plot summaries, but some films need no explanation. I summarized my thoughts on some of the bigger shockers, but feel free to checkout the database and see what you can find.

  • Indiana Jones 4: I am a big fan of the Indiana Jones series, but with Harrison Ford slated to reprise his role as Dr. Henry Jones, Jr., age may play a part. I think that the character, like James Bond, could live through an actor change or two. It’s the character that’s important, not the actor who plays him.
  • Die Hard 4: The first movie was golden, the second movie was alright (although a little low on the “this could actually happen” scale), and the third movie was pretty good (and at least somewhat believable). This one supposed has Willis as Detective John McClane and an unknown actress as his daughter (you know, the ones he never sees). Together they battle a terrorist threat somewhere or another. Bruce seems to have stood the test of time pretty well, but if it’s any good, my Die Hard Trilogy DVD set is outdated.
  • Miami Vice: Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) return from the 80’s to battle drug lords. There are many questions I have about this movie, but the only one I can think of right now is “Where are they going to get a DeLorean?”
  • The Fly: It’s too early for a remake when the old actors are not only still alive, but still active in Hollywood.
  • The A-Team: B.A. Baracus and his fellow vets are back in movie form. It’s an interesting plot line, but without Mr. T, it’s bound to fail. Oh wait, it’s bound to do that anyway.
  • Revenge of the Nerds: I think the “glamour” of being a nerd is very much overblown. I’m a nerd, and I can tell you, there is no glamour.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: Now, I thoroughly enjoyed Pirates: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and if Depp can continue to deliver the Jack Sparrow character (wait, I’m sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow) without making it old, this one will be a hell of a ride. There are also plans for a third film. The plot for Dead Man’s Chest seems to follow The Curse of the Black Pearl, dashing my hopes of a “Bond” type series (several repeated characters with no distinguishable sequence between films), but with a majority of the original cast returning for the next chapter, expect big things from this one.
