new digs for this code monkey

One thing about keeping a public journal is that certain information cannot be published until your actions are made public. This is one such case.

With some mixed emotions, I’ve accepted a position with a software company east of Pittsburgh. I say mixed emotions not because I don’t want to take the job, quite the contrary. It’s been a pleasure working at Commersel for the short time that I’ve been here and it’s sad to have to leave, but when the opportunity to work in a more structured environment popped up, I had to take it.

My new position should allow me to concentrate more on development and less on customer interaction and needs analysis. The business processes (from what I can gather through my discussions with them) are more inline with what I think should occur, ie, marketing and sales determines what new features customers want, technical support reports development bugs, a development manager boils that information down into a task list for the developers, and developers (or code monkeys) concentrate on problem solving and task completion.

The fact that their offices are approximately 10 miles from my house (opposite of Pittsburgh) is no small selling point either. It does seem, however, that employee moral is much better than it was at ComponentOne, and better even than Commersel. I believe that is fostered by the company culture, though. For example, I just received an invitation to a summer outing at Dave and Busters on Aug. 5th. Now, I don’t start until the 15th, but they already want to include me in this type of event.

I’m very excited about this new position. This is a company where I can see myself in 15 years. Let’s hope they see things as I do.
