Virtual reality…

I mentioned my attitude toward software testing earlier, so I won’t bore you with the details.

I will say that VMWare has done a pretty decent job of creating a product that allows for good controlled testing, and lots of it. Their latest version (5.0) allows you to take multiple snapshots, and provides a pretty easy to use snapshot “tree” that shows you the different paths your current profile has gone down and where you are on that path. It also allows you to revert to any snapshot you’ve taken.

In my opinion, the best feature is the ability to “clone” a snapshot into an entirely new VM Profile that you can then run simultaneously with the parent. I’m sure there are some more detailed aspects to this, but what I’ve just listed has made my latest task incredibly easy. I’ve been working on the installation test cases for our product and have been charged with changing these cases to use VMWare instead of ghosting the machines.

Overall, I’m starting to have some new responsibilities thrown at me, which is always a good thing.
