Luck of the draw, I suppose

After having a very slow start in the career area, things have picked up nicely. I’ve found a good job with opportunities to expand my knowledge and contribute to an enterprise-level application. It has also allowed me to do some pretty nice things, such as purchase a new home and provide nicely for the family.
The path I’ve taken to get to this point wasn’t too bad, and I’ve listened to many people with much more horrific stories than I have. I’ve been lucky to “get out when the gettin’s good,” so to speak. An example of such is that the company I left to take my current position just recently closed it doors. Apparently they had a large layoff around a month ago, and then just shutdown. Most of the support of their product is being taken over by another company. That kind of makes me glad I didn’t accept any counteroffers that they tossed my way.
I feel bad for the people I knew there. It was a small company, so I pretty much got to know everyone in the 6 months that I was there. They were pretty good people, and it’s always sad to see bad things happen to good people.
So I count myself lucky to have been able to exit before everything went bad.
