The Steeler’s 5K and my personal goal.

Ever since I ran the Economy 5K back in May, I’ve been planning to run the Steeler’s 5K on Sept. 02. I’ve been trying to keep up with running, averaging about 30 miles a month, so I know I’m physically fit enough to do another 3.1 miles. Sometimes I feel like I could run that distance in my sleep.
My running times, however, has stagnated at around the 9 minutes per mile mark. Yes, I’ve run a few sub-8 minute miles, but it was one mile and done, not 3.1 miles. My typical running pattern seems to be about 8:15, 8:50, 9:10 for mile times in a 3 mile run. For me, it’s not bad, but I know I can do a little better. In order to motivate myself I’m posting my personal goal for the Steeler’s 5K here.
So what is my goal? A sub-27 minute 5K. As far as mile times go, that means I need to average 8:43 per mile to finish at exactly 27 minutes. 8:33 per mile puts me in at 26:30, which would also be pretty respectable. I know I’m not going to be consistent in my mile times, but I’m going to shoot for all of my mile times to be under the 8:50 mark. Given that I’ll most likely gain 20-30 seconds on the first mile, I should have an extra 7 seconds per mile to finish.
Yesterday I ran 3.1 miles in 27:02. I’m 2 seconds off, but I’d like to go as far south of 27 as I can.
