Netgear WGPS606 Vista Setup
Published 8.20.2007 by ~mattg
You may have noticed the Netgear WGPS606 on Vista link in my list of del.icio.us links. Setting up a Vista machine to use this print server is, quite frankly, a nightmare, if only for the lack of documentation. The link gives you pretty good step-by-step instructions, so I won’t bore you with the details.
Essentially, the problem is that the “wizard” that NetGear supplies doesn’t work with Vista. You have to install the desired printer driver’s manually on Vista, and then modify that printer to add the proper port (which, in this case is a standard TCP/IP port). The problem is that none of the port information (port name, queue value, etc) is supplied by NetGear, which means that you have to search the internet (my good friend Google helped) to find the appropriate values.
The worst part about this was that it was for one of my wife’s clients, who also happen to be good friends. As she was working, I was trying to set everything up. What should have taken a half hour took almost 2 hours. The best part: the guy at unnamed super-electronics chain told our friends “Oh yea, it’ll work fine on Vista.” While he was not lying (it does work), he either a) failed to mention or b) didn’t know about the troubles we would encounter.

Thank you so much for writing up that tutorial on how to get the Netgear WGPS606 printserver to work with Vista. You sir, are my hero.
You know, I sometimes question my posting of such things, because I’m not sure that anyone (myself included) ever uses them again.
However, from time to time I get comments like yours that justifies my time in documenting such problems. Thanks
