Pens vs. Sens, Game 4

Published 4.16.2008 by ~mattg

First Period:

The Pens seemed to come out stronger than the Sens, but Gerber kept the puck out of the net. No goals to speak of.

0-0

Second Period:

The Pens cashed in on their first power play in the period, with Malkin shuffling the puck past Gerber. Stillman answered with a similar shuffle past Fleury about halfway through the period to even it up. 5 minutes later, Ruutu took a feed from Tyler Kennedy, lost it to the left side, but pulled a “Crosby-esque” spin-o-rama and backhanded the puck through Gerber’s legs. The controversy of the period was Volchenkov’s waived off goal because of a “distinct kicking motion.” While it worked for us this time, I think that rule should go. There’s no intent portion of the rule, so even if you’re just bringing your foot forward, that’s the “kicking motion” that will get the goal waived off.

2-1 Pens

Third Period:

The Penguins really shut down Ottawa’s offense in the third. Fleury made some key saves, and they weathered the final 1:20 of 6-5. Crosby netted an empty net goal with 7 seconds left. They don’t know who they are playing next, although my assumption would be either New York or New Jersey (unless Washingon can get some defense and stop Philly).

Final 3 -1 Pens

Pens sweep the series 4 - 0
