Pens vs. Rangers, Game 2
Published 4.27.2008 by ~mattg
Prelude:
There’s been some complaining from the Ranger’s camp about Sid’s so-called “dive” near the end of Game 1 that drew the penalty that led to the game winner. While the media may dismiss it as quickly as they picked up the story, I’m sure fans from the Rangers will make it known on Tuesday. Anyway, back to the game. *Note: I watched this game at my parent’s house during our Easter get-together. I missed some bigger parts of the game, but caught the good stuff.
First Period:
The Penguins had some huge scoring chances, but the combination of lack of accuracy and Lundqvist’s amazing saves left us scoreless after 1. Overall, the defense held up well. From the get-go, this game was definitely a more slow-paced, grind-it-out type of game… Something that benefits the Rangers more than the Pens.
0 - 0
Second Period:
Staal lit the lamp on a power play with about 8 minutes left in the second. Aside from that goal, the Ranger’s got more great goaltending from Lundqvist, but Fleury matched with equally impressive play and kept the Rangers off the board.
1-0 Pens
Third Period:
The Penguins really went into lock-down mode defensively, holding the Rangers to only 7 shots the entire period. The Penguins managed to kill a late penalty on Gill and a 6 on 4 situation, with Adam Hall playing a bank shot into an empty net with 27 seconds remaining.
2-0 Pens
Aftermath:
That’s right, aftermath. Apparently, Sean Avery got a few whacks on the back of Fleury’s legs as time expired. Gill and Laraque were having none of it. That started a bit of a pile up at the end of the game involving the players on the ice. Note that, for the Pens, you had the Talbot/Laraque line with Gill and Scuderi, while the Rangers left Jagr on the ice. You expected that sort of physical ending as a sign of things to come. Expect a fight in the first period on Tuesday.
Penguins lead the series 2-0.
