Windows XP SP3 automatic updates fail.

While re-installing Windows on my new hard drive, it became clear that Windows XP SP3 did something to the Windows Update client, because I couldn’t install any updates through either the web interface or the automatic update interface. A quick Google search turned up this entry, which solved my problem.
