At the movies…

I recently received an email from Fandango in which they proceeded to inform me that the last time I bought a movie ticket from them was for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Now, I almost always use Fandango for purchases, and I know for a fact that I haven’t been to the movies since Pirates. That is until Friday.
My son’s impromptu sleepover at my in-laws gave my wife and I a Friday night with nothing to do. We were trying to decide between bowling and The Dark Knight, and since my wife is pregnant, we were not exactly sure if bowling was allowed. So we settled on the movie. I’m glad we did.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a really good movie. Don’t get me wrong, I tend to enjoy most movies I watch (or turn them off if they’re really bad), but The Dark Knight fell into a whole different kind of good. Forgetting for a second that it is, at its core, a superhero movie, it had all the makings of a great movie: superb villains, a love triangle, a moral compass (at least two glaring examples that would spoil the movie if I explained here), great action sequences, and just enough humor, even if it is the Joker’s extremely dark variety.
I know there has been a lot of talk about Heath Ledger deserving an Oscar nod for his portrayal of the Joker. Before seeing the movie, I thought that it was simply trying to honor the actor in his last film. After seeing the film, he definitely deserves a nomination. His portrayal was simply sinister, yet there was a sense of delight you would expect from the character.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend that you do. It’s well worth the ticket price.
